Our Story
Our name, Sakabayashi, comes from the tradition of displaying cedar leaf balls in front of sake breweries to signal the brewing of fresh sake. The direct translation of Sakabayashi is ‘Sake Forest’, inspired by the cedar trees of Mount Miwa, where the God of Sake lives.
Our restaurant is proud to be the first U.S. outpost of Sugidama, a beloved Japanese food establishment with the mission of offering delicious sushi and other specialties at great prices, aiming to fill the hearts of a sake god.

Our History
SUSHIRO is Japan’s leading kaiten sushi restaurant, renowned for its dedication to quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction. We started as a traditional sushi restaurant in Osaka in 1975, and with our strong beliefs and passions, we grew to become the No.1 sushi restaurant brand in Japan.
In 2017, our parent company, F&LC, developed Sugidama as our first Izakaya-style restaurant, in Nishinomiya Kitaguchi, Hyogo Prefecture. With a mission to bring creative and delicious sushi to more customers, we have expanded across Japan. This success led to our first international expansion, with Sugidama making its debut in Hong Kong in 2022.
In 2024, we introduced our North American version, Sakabayashi Sushi Tavern by SUSHIRO, in Boston—our first U.S. location. As we expand globally, we remain committed to sharing the rich flavors and traditions of Japanese cuisine with the world.
